Reflexive verbs in Russian

We explain how to form, use, and conjugate reflexive verbs in Russian. Reflexive verbs have the idea of “self” and always have the suffix -ся (or -сь).

How to form reflexive verbs in Russian

Reflexive verbs are formed and declined almost like all Russian verbs, except for the additional suffix -ся or -сь on their endings.

To conjugate reflexive verbs, do as for regular verbs, but add -ся when the verb ends in a consonant and -сь when the verb ends in a vowel.

How to use reflexive verbs in Russian

Reflexive verbs have many uses in Russian. Here are how they are typically classified, with relevant examples.

Reflexive proper verbs

These are personally directed actions (subject and object are same person). For relevant verbs think of what you do during your morning routine:

  • просыпаться = to wake up
  • умываться = to wash oneself
  • одеваться = to dress oneself

Reciprocal reflexive verbs

These verbs have action pertaining to more than one person and implying reciprocity.

  • встречаться = to meet each other
  • подружиться = to make friends
  • видеться = to see each other
  • познакомитсься = to meet, get acquainted

The passive voice in the reflexive

Reflexive verbs can be used to give a passive mood meaning. This will usually only take place in the third person, and such sentences can be replaced with an impersonal third person construction.

  • Магазин закрывается в 7 часов. = The shop is closed at 7.
  • Здесь продаётся пиво. = Beer is sold here.
  • На собрании обсуждались важные вопросы. = Important questions were discussed at the meeting.
  • Это делается таким образом. = It is done this way.
  • Дом строится. = The house is being built.

Impersonal reflexive constructions

A small number of verbs use the reflexive in impersonal constructions that are widespread in Russian. Generally, such impersonal constructions convey a lower intensity of feeling than their direct counterparts. For example, мне хочется (I feel like) is less intense than я хочу (I want).

  • мне хочется = I feel like
  • мне казется = it seems to me
  • мне нравится = I like
  • мне не спится = I can't sleep
  • вам не верилось = you couldn't believe

Verbs with a result carried out fully

  • Я хорошо выспался. = I slept well.
  • Они разошлись. = They separated.
  • Я дождался того дня. = I waited for this day.

Neuter reflexive verbs

Such neuter verbs only exist in the reflexive and have no non-reflexive form.
